Lib Dems reject incineration of waste and back new autoclave technology

June 29, 2007 12:28 PM

Liberal Democrats on Bradford Council have rejected Conservative plans to use incineration of household rubbish as a back-up, short term disposal solution.

Speaking in the Council Meeting on June 23rd, Councillor Jeanette Sunderland said,

" Increasingly, incineration is yesterday's technology so we wanted to take it off the agenda in Bradford. If you don't do this, there is no pressure for people to reduce, recycle and reuse waste products. We must also reduce the amount of waste packaging we produce. "

The Lib Dems backed a proposal to autoclave domestic waste at a new plant to be built in Buck Street, Bradford. They asked for:

a) A detailed appraisal of odour control and control of emissions

b) An appraisal of how hazardous material is treated

c) An environmental and highways impact assessment to include the combined impact of this project , the neighbouring refining plant, the existing waste transfer station, the recently purchased site on Bowling Back Lane and the Harris Street depot

d) The potential for the use of energy from renewable sources to power the process

e) Continue to raise public awareness of reuse and recycling to manage down the production of waste

f) Increase the kerbside collection of recyclables including plastic

g) An explanation of how community benefit is to be achieved
