Local anger as Government overturns decision on amusement centre

Amusement machines like this could be installed over shops at Greengates

Residents and local councillors have reacted angrily to a decision by the government to allow an amusement arcade to open above a row of shops in Greengates.

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland said,

" The plan was turned down by the Council following objections from local residents about noise and nuisance and from the police who described the area as a ' hot spot for drunkenness and anti-social behaviour.'

The shop unit it self is on the first floor and has an open balcony outside which is bound to attract groups using the amusement centre. This could lead to intimidation and targeting of people using the car park and passers.

It is completely unsuitable for an amusement centre which is why it was originally designated for office use only.

Now the Secretary of State has overruled the Council and the amusement centre can go ahead as long as it gets a license. I am sure that local residents and councillors will want to oppose the granting of the license on the grounds of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour."
