Casualty Reduction Partnership guilty of breaking advertising code4.12.17pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 8th Dec 2005
The West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership ( WYCRP ) has had a complaint against it upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority. The WYCRP had placed advertisements which implied that speed cameras were only installed where there had been four fatal accidents. This was ruled to be misleading for a number of reasons including the fact that it only applied to new camera sites and cameras were sometimes installed at potentially dangerous sites to reduce speed and prevent fatal accidents. Councillor Sunderland, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group said, ' The West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership is run from Bradford on behalf of all the West Yorkshire Authorities. I want to know how the council came to be in a situation where it has been found guilty of misleading the public on what is already a contentious issue. To be advised by the Advertising Standards Authority to ' contact the Advertising Practise Copy Advice Team before putting out any more advertising is pretty humiliating. I am asking the Chief Executive to put together a report explaining how on earth this happened and to get an assurance that this won't happen again. "
