Council asked to back Post Office Card Account12.33.35pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 4th Dec 2006
Councillor Carol Beardmore ( Lib Dem Eccleshill ) is asking the Council to back moves to save the Post Office card Account. In a motion to be debated on December 12th she will say, " The Post Office network is under continuous threat and the loss of business from the Post Office Card Account and the ending of the rural subsidy could be the nail in the coffin for many branches. Postwatch, who are supposed to champion the rights of post office users are a complete waste of time as we discovered when they made no protest about the loss of the Bank Street post office. I want the Council to join with other organisations like the National Association of Sub postmasters to put pressure on the Government to save the post office card account and continue the subsidy for rural post offices. 42,000 people in Bradford use the Post Office Card Account and it is totally wrong for them to be cut adrift when many of them are vulnerable. And the £150m a year rural subsidy is a small price to pay for a valuable community resource. "
