Local Councillors say "no" to oversized blocks of flats.

All three Idle and Thackley Ward Councillors have objected to a proposed development of two and three storey flats at Moorend Works, Highfield Road, Idle.

"We are concerned about the visual impact on this very large development. It will dominate the skyline as it is far too high. This will particularly cause problems for people on The Stray", said Councillor Jeanette Sunderland. "The development is not sympathetic to the siting of the Grade II listed buildings next door to the site. These historic homes will be completely overshadowed."

Councillor David Ward is concerned about the exterior of the building. "It is bleak and featureless with materials that are completely out-of-step with the surrounding homes."

"I am worried about the additional traffic", said Councillor Alun Griffiths. "This is an area with a history of road accidents. The additional traffic can only make matters worse. I am also concerned that there does not seem to be sufficient on-site parking. Residents and their visitors will have to park on Highfield Road which is far from satisfactory."

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland said, "If the plans are not changed significantly then it should be rejected by the Planning Committee. If the Committee is going to give the go ahead for flats then they must be reduced in height. External materials and design must be more in keeping with the surrounding areas. To improve road safety then a light controlled pedestrian crossing must be constructed for Blakehill Primary School to ensure that children can cross to school in safety."
