Councillor Carol Beardmore, who sits on the Council's Young People and Education Improvement Committee, has said she would back car exclusion zones round schools.

She said she had been working hard with schools in her ward, including Cavendish Primary and St Luke's CE Primary, and the police to help ease traffic problems by encouraging parents to park sensibly.

Banning vehicles from parking near to schools could help reverse the dramatic decline in walking, help combat climate change and ease congestion.

School parking remains a hot topic across the district after several head teachers urged parents to take greater care on the school run.
