Cllr David Ward, chair of the Bradford East Local Sports Alliance ( LSA ) has announced that a major focus of the LSA will be increasing sports participation for women and for those residents from low socio-economic groups in Bradford East.

He said,

" Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats through a Parliamentary Question show that nationally 12 million adults, or 30% of the population did not take part in any sport or recreational physical activity last year.

For women this figure rises to 35% and for people from lower socio-economic groups it is 41%.

These shocking figures show that huge swathes of people are not making any efforts to keep fit . There is no way that the Government will hit its target of 2 million more active people by the time the Olympics are staged in 2012 without a huge investment in grass roots sport.

The focus of the Local Sports Alliance in Bradford East will not be on simply providing more facilities for those who are currently active but encouraging back to active involvement in sport those who hung up their trainers when they left school."
